WTCC Students Lend a Holiday Hand

During the month of December, students and staff at the Wayne Technical and Career Center (WTCC) adopted 11 families and donated over $2,000 and 800 pounds of food to the Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth.

The Adopt-a-Family campus wide event, which assisted 51 individuals and 11 families, was organized by students in the Criminal Justice program. Programs and student organizations which adopted a family included: Cosmetology I and II, Criminal Justice, Early Childhood, Health Dimensions and SkillsUSA. Many other programs assisted with the efforts as WTCC students also collected gifts and gently used clothing and blankets for the families. Many of the programs donated various services and items including: a food basket for each family donated by Power Mechanics/Conservation students, cookie trays prepared by Culinary Arts students and gift certificates for free oil changes by Auto Technology students.

In a Jar Wars contest, sponsored by SkillsUSA, over $800 was raised. The Power Mechanics/Conservation program finished in first place with a donation of over $300.00, followed by the Metal Trades program with $200.00, Health Dimensions program with $150.00 and the Cosmetology 2 program with $100.00. Funds were used to purchase Christmas items and a Wal-Mart Gift Card for each family.  The Power Mechanics/Conservation program received a pizza party for their efforts.

According to the Wayne County Department of Aging and Youth, there is a strong need for donations as food banks are low and funding is limited. In addition, while each of the 11 families that WTCC adopted will now have a holiday meal and enough food for two to three weeks, there are other needs as well. In one case, a family with medical issues could no longer afford a phone. WTCC students purchased the family a phone and pre-paid calling cards. To assist, please contact the Wayne County Department of Aging at
